Methods: Twenty-four cases of postherpetic neuralgia were randomized into two groups, an acupuncture group in which 12 cases were treated by acupuncture at Jiaji (Ex-B 2) on the diseased side, and a medication group in which 12 cases were treated by oral obtundent and intramuscular injection of neurotrophic drugs. Results: After four-week treatments, the total effective rate was 91.6% in the acupuncture group and 83.3% in the medication group. Conclusion: Acupuncture can significantly relieve postherpetic neuralgia, with better effects than medication.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe the changes of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in colonic membrane of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) and the clinical efficacy of herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion in treating it, and to explore the action mechanisms. Methods: Seventy-three subjects were randomized into two groups: moxibustion group in which 37 cases were treated by herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion and needling group in which 36 cases were treated by needling. The clinical efficacy and 5-HT expression in colonic membrane were observed. Results: The cure rate was 43.2% in the moxibustion group and 36.1% in the needling group, with no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). Herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion could reduce 5-HT expression in colonic membrane. Conclusion: Herbal cake-partitioned moxibustion might improve the clinical symptoms of IBS-D by reducing 5-HT expression.

Methods: Twenty-four cases of primary bronchial lung cancer with chest pain were treated by balancing acupuncture therapy; the relief of chest pain and its relief time were observed. Results: Among the 24 cases undergoing balancing acupuncture therapy, the chest pain was absolutely relieved in 3 cases, partially relieved in 13 cases, lightly relieved in 4 cases and not relieved in 4 cases; the total response rate was 83.3%. In terms of the relief time, 9 cases responded to the balancing acupuncture therapy in 0-3 min, accounting for 37.5%; 5 cases responded in 4-6 min, accounting for 20.8%; the average responding time was (4.85±1.45) min. Conclusion: Balancing acupuncture therapy is rapid-acting, safe, convenient and inexpensive in the treatment of chest pain following lung cancer.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy and safety of early acupuncture in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Methods: In clinical randomized controlled trial, 90 subjects were divided into drug group and acupuncture group, 45 cases in each group. The neurological deficit score, Bathel index and some blood laboratory indexes were detected before and after treatment in both groups. Results: In acute stage, there were striking differences in the neurological deficit score and activities of daily living (ADL) between before and after treatments in acupuncture group (P<0.01), and between acupuncture group and drug group (P<0.01); but there was no difference in blood lipid and theology between two groups. Conclusion: Acupuncture is rather safe in the early treatment of acute ischemic stroke, and improvement of disability and the patients' quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe the conditions of the activating areas in the brain evoked by needling Shenmen (HT 7) acupoint. Methods: Twelve healthy young volunteers were needled at Shenmen (HT 7) acupoint with rotating and twisting techniques. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was adopted to detect the brain activating areas, TR/TE/FA=3560 ms/50 ms/90°. After scanning, the images were dealt with SPM2. Results: Needling Shenmen (HT 7) primarily activated BA2 and BA1 of the gyms postcentralis in right-sided frontal lobe, BA47 of left-sided inferior frontal gyms and BA43 of left-sided gyms postcentralis, and also activated BA40 of inferior parietal lobule in right-sided parietal lobe, BA22 of gyrus temporalis superior in left-sided lobus temporalis, and BA40 of right-sided insula; however, the sham acupoints could not activate these nucleus. Conclusion: Needling Shenmen (HT 7) can activate the relevant functional areas in the brain.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of moxibustion plus Mecobalamin in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Methods: Eighty subjects were equally allocated into combination and control groups. On the basis of the same basic treatment, the combination group was treated by moxibustion plus Mecobalamin and the control group simply by Mecobalamin. Treatment lasted 3 months. Nerve conduction velocity and symptom severity were compared between pre-treatment and post-treatment. Results: Nerve conduction velocity was improved in both combination and control groups and more obviously in the combination group. The marked effective rate, effective rate and ineffective rate were respectively 52.5%, 32.5% and 15.0% in the combination group and 35.0%, 27.5% and 37.5% in the control group. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups (P<0.01 or P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on a basic treatment, moxibustion plus Mecobalamin is superior to simple Mecobalamin in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

ABSTRACT

To give the considerations on the syndrome differentiation and acupuncture treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, generalize its pathogenesis and summarize treatment rules, this paper reviews and analyzed 52 articles on acupuncture treatment in recent years. It is believed that diabetic peripheral neuropathy is rooted from qi-yin deficiency and presented with blood stasis and collateral obstruction; many organs are affected, the liver, kidney, spleen and stomach in particular; the treatment principle concentrates on unblocking collaterals and regulating organs; treatment centers on limb acupoints, Back-Shu point and Front-Mu point;acupuncture treatment should be adopted early as possible and its clinical efficacy is rather good.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of acupuncture of points of three hand yang meridians for treating postapoplectic finger contracture. Methods: Sixty patients with postapoplectic finger contracture were randomly allocated to treatment and control groups, 30 cases each. The treatment group received acupuncture of points of three hand yang meridians and the control group, conventional acupuncture. The curative effects and posttreatment hand myodynamia scores were compared between the two groups. Results and Conclusion: All the cure rate, marked efficacy rate and total efficacy rate were significantly higher in the treatment group than those in the control group (P<0.05). Hand myodynamia score was significantly lower after treatment than before in both groups (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups after treatment. It is indicated that clinical hand function was improved more in the treatment group than in the control group.
